Mill Operations Shift Supervisor

Atlantic Gold Corporation is developing the 2mtpa Touquoy open pit gold mine and on-site processing plant in central Nova Scotia as part of the Moose River Consolidated Mine. We are currently assembling our key mine operations team and are seeking an experienced  professional to fill the role of Mill Operations Shift Supervisor. This position is based at the Touquoy mine site located approximately 1hour northeast of Halifax, Nova Scotia. The project is fully funded and permitted and is expected to go into production in fall 2017. Work at one of the best new mines in North America, while living in a city regularly rated as one of the most livable in Canada.

The role of Mill Operations Shift Supervisor offers an excellent opportunity for an experienced professional to join our organization and make a significant impact on our milling efficiency and production.
Under the direction of the Mill Operations General Foreman, the Mill Operations Shift Supervisor is responsible for managing the daily activities of  mill operators, ensuring safety, efficiency and quality of work in different areas including crushing, grinding, gravity, high intensive leach, CIL, elution, carbon regeneration, cyanide detoxification, mill reagents mixing and preparation, mill control room, mill plant and instrument air systems, raw water/reclaim process water systems and the tailings management facility.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities including but not limited to:

  • Be a visible safety leader.
  • Identify safety issues and encourage a site safe work culture with safety being top priority.
  • Promote & foster Company goals & objectives with all Mill activities.
  • Apply all applicable regulations, codes and corporate/site standards to all Mill processes and procedures.

  • Train mill operators in all tasks assigned to them, check that work is being done safely and correct any unsafe acts and conditions.
  • Ensure that only authorized and adequately trained workers operate tools and equipment or use hazardous chemicals like cyanide, hydrochloric acid, hydrated lime, etc.
  • Perform Lock out/Tag out and Try out isolations in accordance with the company’s energy isolation procedures.
  • Follow security procedures to protect company assets.
  • Responsible for the inspection of the tailings management facility during the shift.
  • Identify workers with problems that could affect safety at the worksite. Follow up with accident prevention training where necessary.
  • Plan and manage the workload of mill processing operators to achieve desired production goals.
  • Schedule the annual vacation of mill operators and assign coverage.
  • Inspect each operating circuit during the course of every shift.
  • Assist mill operators in troubleshooting operational, mechanical, electrical and instrumentation issues to avoid downtime.
  • Interface with Mechanical Foreman, E-I Foreman, Chief Metallurgist, Chief Assayer, Pit Shifter and Grade Control Geologists to ensure throughput and recovery targets in a responsible and safe manner.
  • Ensure that all circuits are being operated according to KPIs.
  • Review circuit check sheets and circuit log sheets, take corrective action if needed to maintain KPIs.
  • Prepare shift production reports, submit work requests to maintenance planner, fill out purchase requisitions, stock up mill supplies, inventory mill reagents and grinding media to ensure minimum/maximum level of supply at all times.
  • Conduct Cross-Shift handover meetings before leaving worksite.
  • Manage mill operators’ attendance record and submit to mill clerk/payroll.
  • Work with the maintenance team to achieve efficient plant equipment performance and reliability.
  • Work with the Metallurgy Team to ensure optimum metallurgical performance of the process plant.
  • Work with the Assay Laboratory Team to ensure integrity of mill samples.
  • Champion continuous improvement ideas, implement applicable best practices and encourage mill operators to strive for excellence in their job performance.
  • Follow notification escalation protocol in downtime events.
  • Request assistance from other departments as required to achieve and maintain production targets.
  • Coordinate and execute small scale projects in the process area by following the change management procedure.
  • Communicate production plans, deadlines and KPIs to all operators.
  • Take ownership of the problems in the mill processing plant and their solutions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.      

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, and Experience:

  • Ability to work with diverse personalities.
  • Extensive people management experience.
  • Experience in mineral milling environments – preferably gold.
  • Knowledge of chemical handling and reagent mixing.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, Power Point, and Outlook) and Microsoft Project.
